Across Africa, civic leaders carry enormous responsibility. They defend communities, sustain democratic life, and respond to urgent social challenges.
Yet many leaders do this work under conditions of shrinking civic space, institutional fragility, and growing financial uncertainty. In such an environment, leadership often becomes trapped in constant crisis response rather than the deliberate work of building resilient institutions.
The Civic Leadership Institute was established in response to this reality.
CLI exists to walk with civic leaders in the action zone, strengthen the institution of civic leadership, and build a sanctuary for a community of civic leaders who accompany one another in the difficult work of serving society.
Through a series of reflections with civic leaders, we identified seven shifts that the civic leadership ecosystem must not only embrace, but actively catalyse:

Moving from top-down interventions where communities are treated as beneficiaries, to a chain of change where grassroots communities are recognised as the architects of transformation.
Shifting from accidental heroism and waiting for a saviour, to intentional leadership multiplication that builds systems of leadership rather than relying on iconic individuals.
Moving away from imported expertise and technical jargon toward recognising lived wisdom as the primary source of civic leadership knowledge.
Replacing episodic workshops and short trainings with continuous, relational “walking with” that supports leaders over time.
Reframing wellbeing from a luxury or afterthought to strategic infrastructure for resilience in civic leadership.
Destigmatising the movement between civic and political leadership, recognising that both spaces contribute to democratic renewal.
Moving beyond dry technocratic reporting toward reimagining civic narratives through art, storytelling, and lived experience.
